La Cucaracha in Zagreb!

Two young brothers and their godfather from Mexico took a trip together. One of the cities they visited in Europe was Zagreb. Their first and probably the only time in Zagreb. It was beautiful sunny day in June. Streets full of people meeting for drinks and lunch, crowded events in the squares and summer festivals in the parks. This was such a cheerful tour, full of jokes, exchanging stories about Croatia and Mexico, a bit of rakija tasting and visiting a very nice shop to buy a piece of jewelry for one of the girlfriends. After nearly three hours of enjoyable sightseeing, it was time for lunch. An octopus salad (quite common in the summer), two traditional Croatian dishes (pašticada with gnocchi and grilled meat) and one duck with mlinci (a traditional dish in Zagreb), the guests were very relaxed. They started singing La Cucaracha during lunch. They laughed at the fact that Mexican telenovelas were very popular here, so a lot of people can understand and speak a little bit of Spanish! We also use the expression “it’s a Mexican soap opera” when retelling dramatic situations, especially  related to love stories.

One thing that makes this a great memory was the energy of the oldest member in the group, a 70-year-old godfather who was one of the happiest and funniest people that I met. He was such an inspiration, showing us that age is related more to one’s personality rather than a number! And that travelling does not have to end once you get to certain age :)
