The Perfect Honeymoon

They were lucky - it was a beautiful sunny Saturday in July and their first day in Croatia. And do you know what Saturday morning means in Zagreb? You better doll yourself up because there will most likely be photographers in the city center! On Saturday morning, locals dress up classy, chic and trendy to grab their coffee in the city center (check out the Flower Square, Ban Jelačić Square and Tkalča Street).

That morning I met the American couple, just married. They were excited about their honeymoon in Croatia. We went to the European Square, the main square, the cathedral. Imagine the sun, morning bustling, people carrying their grocery bags from Dolac Market while dressed up as if they headed to an elegant dinner. As we walked around, talking about the interesting history behind the stones and streets and buildings, the charming modern lifestyle was unraveling in front of us. Street guitar players, random friends meeting loudly in the bars, relaxed smiles everywhere, flowers, fresh products…They tried rakija (a strong traditional schnapps), Croatian cheese and olive oil. In the Upper Town, they were impressed by the St.Mark’s Church roof tiles. And the most shocking part was the loud cannon shot at noon with more than 200 tourists around the tower, screaming and laughing at the same time! The city experience continued in Lower Town in my favorite local cake shop. Suddenly, musicians came out next to our table and made the whole crowd dancing as we enjoyed the cake and coffee in the shade of the beautiful palaces of Zagreb.
